Human population growth is one of the biggest challenges that our environment faces today. It’s important that population growth is managed in a sustainable manner that respects both air, land and water resources. As a part of the challenges that we face today, many animals are facing extinction. The Colcom Foundation is an organization which is aiming to help reduce the environmental impact of human activities.

The Colcom Foundation is concerned that humanity is undergoing a 6th mass extinction. They feel that the Earth’s Ecosystem is only able to sustain a limited balance of human activities as well as plant and animal life. Therefore, the organization feels that human life support systems as well as earth’s delicate ecological balance is being unraveled.

The foundation provides funding for environmental conservation efforts, especially in Pennsylvania. As an example of their conservation efforts, the Hollow Oak Land Trust protects land near the Pittsburgh airport from human damage. This means they have over 700 acres of land under their direct protection. They also have other areas under their direct protection: the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy which funds protection of the land in the Western PA area.

Colcom Foundation is heavily involved in providing educational, research, and legal resources. They also maintain the National Aviary which houses 500 birds from 150 species around the world. Lastly, they are also educating youth on the importance of anti-litter campaigns and recycling. Most recently, the foundation supported the We Are Nature: Living in the Anthropocene exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Furthermore, they are helping to change lives with a culinary training program.

The Colcom Foundation was founded in 1996 by Cordelia May. She had always had a deep concern for the balance of nature. Her lifelong passion was the delicate balance of the needs of a human population along with environmental concerns. Refer to this article for additional information.
