Alliance Defending Freedom

The Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal and public policy organization dedicated to advocating for religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family through impact litigation, education, research, and disseminating information.

“Alliance Defending Freedom” is a non-profit law firm that works in cooperation with lawyers worldwide. Their primary concern is protection of fundamental freedoms in nations throughout the world while they advocate for greater understanding of religion both domestically and internationally.

This article will address what Alliance Defending Freedom does as well as their proposed goals. These goals are based on “a Christian worldview” which makes it hard to disagree with them because they are all rooted in Christianity.

The alliance’s board of directors as of 2018:

Former board member Robert P. George was previously chairman and served on the board of directors until October 1, 2018. The ADF has stated that George chose to step down from the board due to his upcoming appointment as chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and that he would remain a senior fellow at ADF, a position he has held since 2014.

Alliance Defending Freedom (formerly Alliance Defense Fund) was founded in 1994 by a group of Christian leaders who wanted to form a network across denominational lines within Christianity for the purpose of defending religious freedom. In fact, the organization was founded in response to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU on behalf of seven members of the Little Sisters of the Poor who were forced to give birth to children that were not conceived in accordance with their religious beliefs against contraception. The organization stands for protecting religious believers from being “forced by government mandates to act against their conscience”.

Despite its particular focus on Christian causes, Alliance Defending Freedom has been involved with cases involving Muslims, Jews and atheists as well. ADF responded to a case made by Muslim advocacy group CAIR, which challenged Hijab-wearing women in front of an Arizona court. Visit this channel on YouTube, for additional information.
