Why Podcaster Greg Soros Teaches Creators the Business Side

Many aspiring creators know how to tell a story. Fewer know how to pitch an advertiser or negotiate a distribution agreement. Podcaster and producer Greg Soros built a mentorship approach around that gap at Podcraft Media Lab, his Austin-based company.

“Most mentorship programs focus on creative development, which is important but incomplete,” Greg Soros podcast explains from his studio. “We also teach the business fundamentals.” His goal is to help mentees build sustainable revenue models, which he describes as “what transforms a hobby into a career.”

A Two-Track Curriculum

Creative instruction still carries weight. Mentees train in narrative structure and sound design, skills rooted in the podcaster’s technical background from Berklee College of Music. They then turn to monetization strategies and audience development, areas he sharpened while working at major podcasting studios. The program also connects participants with sponsors, distributors, and collaborators from his industry network. Those introductions can be the difference between a promising pilot and a show with real backing.

Greg Soros directs much of this effort toward creators from underrepresented communities through the Podcast Academy’s diversity fellowship program. He made that commitment when founding Podcraft, choosing it over a business focused solely on high-paying Fortune 500 clients.

Returns on the Investment

A sponsored profile in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal reports that the time he dedicates to mentorship has produced unexpected returns. Several mentees have secured major distribution deals, and three shows hit six-figure download totals in their first year. Maria Rodriguez, whose investigative podcast “Border Stories” recently won a podcasting award, calls the work “ecosystem building.”

Industry peers have taken note. Major podcast networks are paying attention, and several competitors are creating similar programs. Greg Soros frames the effort in long-term terms, saying that investing in emerging creators means “shaping the future sound of the entire medium.” For him, the business lessons and the creative ones belong in the same toolkit.
