Activision Blizzard In the News Cycle
Activision Blizzard is a worldwide video game publisher and the owner of Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm. It was founded on October 1, 1979, and has been developing games for over three decades. From its inception, Activision focused primarily on software for computers to amuse gamers until it acquired Brøderbund’s product line in 1998. Now Activision also publishes games for consoles and mobile devices, including iPhone, Android, Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Activision Blizzard is a global company with offices worldwide, including in Irvine, California. The company’s headquarters are located in Santa Monica, California, where about 2250 employees have workstations. It is the parent company of Activision Publishing Inc., Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., and King Digital Entertainment PLC. Activision Blizzard had a market value of $41 billion before the release of its new Call of Duty game in 2017, making it one of the most valuable companies in California and the world.
It publishes several titles, including World of Warcraft, Destiny, Hearthstone, Overwatch, and Diablo III, and games based on Marvel’s products, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Avengers. They also publish several games under their labels like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5, and Skylanders Imaginators.
It was founded by four people, including its current CEO, Bobby Kotick, who is also one of the few billionaires in the gaming industry. “Activision Publishing was a publishing company first and foremost, not an incubator for future Activision operations,” says George Rose, one of Activision’s earliest employees who has a claim to its creation. The year 1982 marks the beginning of Activision’s success. Pitfall! was a highly successful game for Atari systems that sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Dungeon Master was another game that got rave reviews from critics and gamers. These games have done well enough for Activision to release more than 50 titles over the following years.
