Shelton Haynes
Shelton Haynes is the C.E.O., President of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), and a President of the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). He is also a National Urban League board member and Chief Executive Officer for Leadership 100, Inc.
- Background and Education
Shelton Haynes attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (1991). Haynes also received his Master of Business Administration in Management from N.Y.U. in 1993. He is an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member and the National Urban League’s Board of Directors. Haynes is also a member of the National Action Network (NAN).
- Professional Career
Haynes began his professional career after graduating with his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1991). During his collegiate career, he was a team manager for the Men’s basketball team. Additionally, he worked as a special assistant to two state representatives in North Carolina.

As the C.E.O. of CUMC, Haynes oversees the largest private employer in New York City. He manages funds for health care services, academic programs, and research at CUMC. He has also led the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and Columbia University Medical Center.
- Philanthropic Activities
At the University of North Carolina, Haynes was also a Student Government and Graduate Public Affairs Association member. He served as the national philanthropy chair for Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and was a trustee for the Urban League for 25 years (2001-2018). Haynes also serves as a trustee for the National Urban League.

Haynes has been known to be very charismatic, energetic, and passionate about his work. He is also known to make others feel empowered and motivated through his leadership skills. During his time at the University of North Carolina, Haynes was part of a team that qualified for the NCAA basketball tournament 1991.

Haynes has been awarded many awards, including the Urban League’s Outstanding Trustee Award (2001), The Entrepreneurship Award for Community Development (2001). He was also awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Development in 2002.
Haynes’ success is a prime example of perseverance, hard work, and determination. He has overcome some obstacles throughout his life to achieve his goals. He has continued to be successful after being diagnosed with Cerebral palsy (C.P.) at the age of two.
