Kelcy Warren was brought into the world in 1955 in Gladewater, Texas, a tiny hamlet in the country’s eastern region, the youngest of four sons. His father started as a ditch digger for Sun Oil before rising to the position of a general recorder. Having grown up in Louisiana and barely finishing her senior year of high school, Warren’s mother was a departmental store employee. Her boys’ high school graduation and college enrollment were top priorities.

Although they both had employment, the Warrens’ constant concern over finances led his folks to hunt for new opportunities to make additional revenue frequently. At age 12, Warren started working various jobs. He operated at a filling station hauling hay for 30 cents per hour. As he grew to maturity, Warren started working in the oilfield. He labored as a tunnel builder, a welder’s assistant, and a technician repairing landlines for monitoring as a crew member that fixed petroleum defects. His parents had constantly urged the young Warren to hustle and save income.

As a result of his efforts, Kelcy Warren achieved academic success. When Warren asked his high school, academic advisor what career he could obtain with a four-year degree, the counsellor suggested he study engineering since it pays the most. Warren started college at UTA in 1974, using money he had saved and earned as a teenager to cover tuition and living expenses.

In 1978, Kelcy Warren received his bachelor’s civil engineering degree. A pipeline design engineer at Lone Star Gas Company, he was recruited from the University of Texas in Austin. After three years, he switched to the business side of resource development by joining Endevco, a local energy marketing agency.

Kelcy and a business partner bought Endevco in 1992, rebranding it as Cornerstone Natural Gas. Several years later, they decided to put it up for sale. Soon after, Warren established Energy Transfer with several other people and rose to the position of chairman.
