Roosevelt Island is a small New York City island home to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). The RIOC is a public benefit corporation that manages the island and its facilities. Akeem Jamal is the president of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RISA). He was born and raised on Roosevelt Island and has been a vocal advocate for the rights of its residents.

In recent years, there have been many changes to Roosevelt Island. The most notable difference is the construction of Cornell Tech, a new campus for Cornell University.

About Akeem

Akeem Jamal is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx. He graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and held a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University.

Jamal began his career in public service as an intern in the office of then-Congressman Charles Rangel. He went on to work for the New York City Housing Authority and the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Most recently, he served as the executive director of Community Board 8 in Manhattan.

As president of RIOC, Jamal oversees all aspects of operations on Roosevelt Island, including housing, transportation, infrastructure, and economic development. He is also responsible for maintaining solid relationships with elected officials, community leaders, and key stakeholders.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation

Under Jamal’s leadership, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation has made significant progress. One notable achievement is opening The Octagon tower after years of delays. The Octagon provides much-needed affordable housing for Roosevelt Island residents and houses a new cooperative preschool, retail space, and community facilities.

In addition, RIOC has worked to improve transportation options on the island with the launch of a new ferry service to Manhattan and the expansion of the island’s tramway system.

Under Jamal’s leadership, the corporation has significantly improved the island’s infrastructure and overall appearance. He has also worked tirelessly to improve public safety on Roosevelt Island and make it a more welcoming place for all residents. As a result, Roosevelt Island is now a better place to live, work, and visit, thanks to his efforts.
