Gino Pozzo on Running a Football Club Successfully

As owner of Watford F.C., Gino Pozzo earned a reputation for taking clubs in the lower division to top-flight leagues. Pozzo was born to Gianpaolo and Giuliana Pozzo, who, interestingly, were passionate football lovers. He grew up in Udine, Italy, and was related to former presidents of Udinese Calcio F.C. through his mother. Today, the Pozzo family is still loyal to the Udinese club.

At age 18, Pozzo moved to the U.S., where he attended Harvard University for his Master’s education. He later married a Catalan, and this prompted him to move to Spain, where he spent 20 years living in Barcelona. In 2013, Pozzo moved to London, England, with his wife and three kids. He wanted to be more directly involved in the everyday operations of the Watford Football Club, which, at the time, was his newly-acquired football club.

The Pozzo family appears to have a genetic passion for football, and it all started when Gianpaolo bought Udinese F.C. in 1986 with profits he made from the family’s tool-making business. At the time of acquisition, the Pozzo family was focused on the woodworking industry – making sure the skill is passed from one generation to another. In 2008, the family sold their woodworking business so they can focus more on their football clubs.

Gino Pozzo confirms that though football is not their major activity and the main focus of their attention, they enjoy doing it and are very committed to doing it properly. He further explains, in an interview with the Watford Observer, that football for them started as a passion when his father purchased Udinese F.C. According to him, their passion for football is linked to the family’s involvement in the local community and the need to help Udinese F.C.

Gino Pozzo said these in 2012 when he had just bought Watford F.C. The family, however, knows you need more than just passion to effectively run a football club. It is a multi-million-dollar industry that can fetch tremendous success when you are committed to it. Refer to this article to learn more.
