Shelton Haynes
Shelton Haynes is the CEO and President of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. This organization is responsible for planning, operating, maintaining, and enhancing all residential, business, and transportation services on Roosevelt Island. With a background in construction management, Haynes has been at the forefront of the nation’s development of parks and recreational facilities.
Shelton directed the implementation of a $200 million streetscape project on Roosevelt Island that transformed its main thoroughfare into a vibrant, people-oriented urban setting. Haynes is known for his involvement in beautification projects and community outreach programs. He has led an effort to revitalize Roosevelt Island’s cultural enrichment programs and is involved in community development in New York City.
Shelton Haynes attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. After studying for one year in England, Haynes returned to Chicago, where he worked as a curator and then as an engineer in municipal housing projects. Through these experiences, Shelton learned the business aspects of design, construction, and planning, which are just as important as engineering skills.
Haynes, born in Chicago, has a long-standing interest in the education and welfare of children. He has helped develop programs that work with local neighborhoods and school districts to promote education. He also enjoys working with children through the arts. He is involved in various non-profit organizations, such as The Harlem Arts Alliance (HAMACA), The George Gershwin Foundation, and The Society for the Advancement of Children’s Books.

He will also continue revitalizing Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, making it a community for families, seniors, and businesses. Shelton Haynes is currently involved in a project to build 800 new homes with ground-floor retail spaces. For him, it’s all about the people and improving their lives.
