Eamon O’Rourke advice on upcoming filmmakers

Eamon O’Rourke is an award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter and director. He is well known for his debut feature film, “Asking for It”, which was embraced by many and captivated audiences worldwide. Eamon has over a decade of experience in filmmaking, television and media production.

When the idea of making a film came to Eamon, he didn’t have the confidence or knowledge to make it happen. Here are the five things he wishes someone would have told him when he first embarked on this journey:

  1. Filmmaking is an art that takes a long time, and one must prepare:

Eamon O’Rourke says that filmmaking is not easy; it takes a lot of time, effort and preparation. He says that one must look at the journey as a learning curve and a growth process. During the journey, one must be prepared for various good and bad things and know when to seek help; a mentor is essential in making the film. The film doesn’t just start with writing scripts or producing videos but also filmmaking skills like editing, lighting, sound etc.

  1. Always control your financiers and never let them control your filming process:

Filmmakers who have been in the industry for a long time know that there are different kinds of financiers. O’Rourke says you should always be in control of your financiers. He says that the one who controls you gives you the most power and knows what to do with it. One must constantly try to get out of the system that weakens you.

  1. Never doubt you know and believe and be open to learning new things:

O’Rourke believes that one of the best things about filmmaking is that it is a never-ending journey. One must always believe in themselves and be open to learning new things, new techniques and approaches. O’Rourke says that many people know more than you do in the industry, so you should be open to learning from them and keep working on your craft.

  1. Always create no room for success in comparison with others:

One of the biggest issues that every filmmaker deals with is comparing their work to what others do. O’Rourke says it is very easy to compare yourself to others, but one must learn to create a benchmark for themselves and never be afraid to fail.

  1. Experimentation and learning new things will always be there:

Eamon O’Rourke believes that experimenting is normal in any field. He says you can learn a lot from good and bad experimentation. He says that one should always be open to learning new things and not be afraid to fail.
